Have an Adventurous (Long) Weekend!

What are you up to for Labor Day weekend?  We've been having a little NYC staycation the last two days - we already took the tram to Roosevelt Island, treated ourselves to some comfort food on the west side, and got our Eddie Murphy fix last night with Coming to America.

I'm in search of some wall art, so tomorrow I'll be heading to the Brooklyn Flea to hopefully find some vintage prints that will work in our space.  Wish me luck!  Fingers crossed Dough will have some of their amazing donuts at the Flea Market.  It is a holiday weekend after all...

Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts!

Listening Library: Peggy Lee

This week, Laurent and I (well, mostly Laurent) have started the task of sorting through and organizing the hundreds of records we have in our apartment.  We've found so many gems, and I'm especially enjoying American jazz singer/songwriter Peggy Lee this week.
She's most well known for hits like "Fever" and "Lover", but I'm going back in the vault for her breakthrough hit, "Why Don't You Do Right".  Enjoy!

Fashionable Femme: Violaine Bernard

I'm going to try out a new feature here at Duly Noted to highlight some lovely ladies with amazing personal style.

First up... Violaine Bernard, fashion director at Velour magazine.  I can't get enough of her cozy French look and then there's her hair!  Doesn't her style feel so refreshingly simple and refined?

Laughs for Monday Morning

After a brief hiatus, I'm back... and I brought Lionel Ritchie humor with me.  Enjoy your week!

PopSpots by Bob Egan

I stumbled upon PopSpots by Bob Egan today, and I couldn't stop checking out his work.  He tracks down the exact location where famous events in pop culture have happened, photographs the location, and overlays the historical photo.

Some of my favorites...

The Who's "The Kids are Alright" album cover

West Side Story album cover

Neil Young's "After the Goldrush" album cover

My Name is New York by Nora Guthrie and the Woodie Guthrie archives

Listening Library: Brenton Wood

Here's a little ol' fashioned soul for your Monday Morning.  Do you guys know Brenton Wood?  I had only ever heard "Gimme a Little Sign", but he's the kind of artist worth going back in the archives for.

In the Kitchen: Green Lentils with Lovage

1/2 small chopped sweet onion
1 garlic clove
1 tablespoon olive oil
12 ounces whole green lentils, rinsed and strained
1/2 cup chopped lovage (I couldn't find any at our grocery, so I used parsley)
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
3-4 cups water

Chop the onion, lovage, and thyme and set aside.

Heat skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.  Sautee the chopped onions for 5 minutes, stiring occassionally.  When the onions begin to soften, add the garlic until they begin to soften, but not brown. Once the onions and garlic have softened completely (about 8-10 minutes total), stir in the lentils and water.

Add the chopped lovage, thyme, and orange zest.  Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce to low-medium heat, cover and simmer until tender.

Remove the lentil mixture with a slotted spoon if any liquid is left. Reduce the liquid in the pan, while adding a little more olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.

Now and Later: Round I

The interwebs are abuzz with fall fashion trends, but it pains me to start thinking about fall already when I still feel like my summer wardrobe has room to keep chugging along.  However, now is a great time to snatch up some end of the season deals, especially if they can work well in fall.

So in the coming days, I'll be sharing a few buy-'em-now, wear-'em into next season pieces, styled for late summer and early fall.  First up... chambray cinched pants on sale at J.Crew.

August Arrives!

Whew, July flew past me so quickly.  I realized there's a number of things still on my summer to-do list, and I'm hoping August will allow me some time to:

  • Take a train ride up north and hike for the day
  • Go to Central Park with enough food (Boylan's! Fruit salad! Paninis!) and books to get me through the day
  • Rent bikes and explore Governor's Island
  • See in a movie in the park (I'm crossing my fingers that Coming to America wins Viewer's Choice)
  • Try out some new ice cream parlors

Do you have any big summer plans you still want to accomplish?  I think I'm going to have a little staycation here in NYC to just enjoy the beautiful weather before it fades away.
